The Alzheimer’s Society is braced for its busiest time of the year for its support helpline.
As families come together over Christmas, it may be the first time they notice changes in loved ones which may be the first signs of dementia and over the last two years, the charity has reported a 15% increase in calls in January.
The helpline offers both practical and emotional help as well as assistance on getting a formal diagnosis which is often the key to accessing help and assistance.
Chief Executive Kate Lee explained, “The realities of dementia often take place behind closed doors and our aim is to shine a light on the condition and bring it out into the open.”
The task of raising awareness is being helped by a number of celebrity ambassadors including David Baddiel and Suranne Jones, both of whom have personal connections to the condition and have lent their voices to reenact some of the calls received to the helpline to encourage more people to seek help.
Dementia remains the UK’s biggest killer and one in three people born today will develop the disease so getting help early can be crucial.
